The most beautiful walking routes
A unique nature reserve. That’s what Sallandse Heuvelrug is. Did you know that we have a unique nature reserve in the east of our country? Sallandse Heuvelrug is situated between Nijverdal and Holten, and is connected by the Toeristenweg, which meanders through the landscape. There are numerous cycling and walking trips for you to go on. You can find various animal species in this nature reserve, such as roe deer and grouse. Sallandse Heuvelrug has plenty to offer.
Sallandse Heuvelrug and Twente are ideal for mountain biking. If you're eager enough, you can complete a 700-kilometre MTB trip that takes you through Twente on ever-changing paths in about a week. A route can be devised for every level of cyclist, whether you’re a member of the local MTB club, FCV Het Twentse Ros, or would simply like to rent mountain bikes for a Sunday outing with your family. There are flat paths with modest climbs on which novices of the sport can learn the ropes. But there are also plenty of artificial obstacles that professionals can use to show off their skills. Buitencentrum Sallandse Heuvelrug (Outdoor Centre)
Before your walk, visit the information centre of Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission) in Buitencentrum Sallandse Heuvelrug. There is also a shop offering natural and nature-related products. Don’t forget to journey to the stars at Hellendoorn Observatory.
Looking for a fun outing with the kids? Discover the enormous collection of animal species in Natuurmuseum Holterberg. With more than a thousand animals and eleven life-sized dioramas. And for children, there’s also Het Bos van Daantje Das (Daantje the Badger's Forest).
Canadian War Cemetery
The Canadian War Cemetery lies somewhat hidden in the woodland of the Holterberg. Here, 1393 young men and one woman have been buried. There is an information centre, where, using touchscreens, you can get closer to the people who never made it home. You can also take a guided tour.
