Commemoration 48th Highlanders of Canada

During the commemoration the fallen Canadian soldiers will be remembered. The soldiers of the Regiment 48th Highlanders of Canada are specifically remembered because of their important role in the liberation of the Veluwe and Apeldoorn.

Under the name Cannonshot, the Canadian regiments were on their way to liberate the Veluwe from the Germans. While crossing the IJssel River, disaster struck the Regiment 48th Highlanders of Canada. It lost 20 soldiers during the liberation of the Veluwe, including their commander Donald MacKenzie. In 1982 Prince Bernard unveiled a plaque at the little church in Wilp in memory of the loss of 20 soldiers of this Canadian regiment from Toronto, The regiment 48th Highlanders was one of the regiments that, among others, liberated Apeldoorn in the night of April 16-17, 1945.↵ The 48th Highlanders was one of the regiments that liberated Apeldoorn in the night of April 16, 1945.

The organization is in the hands of the 48th Highlanders of Holland Pipes and Drums from Apeldoorn. The commemoration begins at 14.30 hours at the Canadian Cemetery of Honor in Holten. The public is welcome to attend this commemoration.
