May 5 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands. In Ootmarsum and the surrounding area, people will reflect on what happened during the war. Although there was no fighting, the war was palpable everywhere. Several places remind of it. On the occasion of "80 Years of Liberation" a special bicycle tour is organized along these places.

Although there was no fighting, the war was palpable everywhere. Several places remind of it. On the occasion of "80 Years of Liberation" a special bicycle tour is organized along these places.
May 5 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands from the German occupiers. A good time to reflect on what happened in Ootmarsum and its surroundings during World War II. Although there was no fighting, the war was everywhere. Various places and monuments in and around the town are a permanent reminder of this.
On the occasion of "80 Years of Liberation" a bicycle tour is organized along several of these places and monuments. Interesting for both tourists and locals.
This Liberation Tour is led by an expert guide. He will provide text and explanation where necessary. Participants will get an almost complete picture of the war in Ootmarsum and its surroundings.
Jew hunt
The bicycle tour takes in among other things "buildings with a story" in the town, past the Kite Monument in the Ageler Es, past the location at the foot of the Kuiperberg where four Jewish people in hiding were killed under summary execution, past the farm in Hezingen where people in hiding and members of the resistance hid for a long time until they were discovered, and to the place in the Springendal where the Allies secretly supplied the resistance with weapons and ammunition by means of drops. It also paints a picture of the Jew hunt with fatal results.
Dates
The Liberation Tour lasts one and a half to two hours. The tour is run on three days:
- Saturday, May 3 (start 12:00 p.m.)
- Sunday 4 May (beginning 14.00 hours)
- Monday, May 5 (beginning 11.00 am).
