Homer Wells is an orphan who has spent his entire life in an orphanage. According to Dr. Larch, he was repeatedly returned by adoptive parents because he was a crying baby. Dr. Larch raises him as his own son. Dr. Larch not only takes in children of unmarried mothers, he also performs abortions. As Dr. Larch grows older, he would like Homer to take over his practice, but Homer has objections to the abortion procedures. Moreover, Homer has other plans. The film received an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Michael Caine (Dr. Larch) received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
