Before you jump to conclusions: Goor is just Middle Dutch for swamp. Those were apparently in southern Twente, a few centuries ago. It is one of the oldest towns in Twente, anno 1263, with a fancy nickname: the Twentse Haagje. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Goor was the bustling center of the textile industry, courtesy of an Englishman who ended up here by accident.

Textile hotspot of Twente

Wooden shoe museum

The fact that Goor became a textile hotspot is thanks to Thomas Ainsworth. The English textile engineer founded the first weaving school in Goor in 1833 - and the rest is history, we can say. As thanks for his work, he was given a place of honor in the local cemetery after his death. Fortunately, a gravestone is not the only highlight in Goor. With a little luck, you can see sails of the Braakmolen turning. Near this corn mill is the Clog Museum. You can feel on your clogs what you can see here.

Goors Historical Museum

Have you spotted that cute little train station in Goor yet? Although the train still stops there, it no longer functions as a station, train tickets you get from a vending machine. The station now houses the Goors Historical Museum. Here you can learn everything about the history of Goor, about archeology, clocks, grave drums and - there he is again - Thomas Ainsworth.

Reggeloop

If you still haven't had enough of Goor and want to know even more, look for the banks of the small river Regge that runs through town. Since 2017 the Reggeloop walking trail has been opened here, along which the history of Goor is told in words and pictures. Chances are you will walk in the footsteps of a certain Englishman.
